Since mentoring many small business hopefuls, I have come to realize a very disturbing fact. Many very bright and hopeful female entrepreneurs have crossed my office threshold with the mistaken idea that just being a woman gives them an advantage over their male counterparts. Sadly, this is not as true as we have been led to believe.

Certainly the female population of today is much better off than their mothers or grandmothers, but obtaining financial support/loans is not viewed by bankers any differently than it is for male entrepreneurs. A myth has been circulating for years that has led entrepreneurs to believe that women-owned and minority-owned businesses can obtain loans easier. Unfortunately, that is only a myth.

If your entrepreneurial dream requires a bank loan, the process is not any easier if you are a woman or a minority. The only slight advantage is that there may be additional lending sources available if you are in either of these categories. But you still have to sell the lender on your business and means of repayment.

Both male and female executives in the corporate arena have much in common in terms of professional aspirations. However, the playing field is far from being equal. A survey was done by a non-profit research group called Catalyst recently. Male & female executives at 1,000 of the largest corporations in the U.S. were surveyed and more than half of the women said that they aspire to a CEO position. They were even willing to make sacrifices such as delaying a marriage and/or children, and that very willingness shouts to us that the field is not equal.

Other survey results were as follows:

49.5 percent of all employed managers and professionals are women, but they still tend to manage only other women.
The highest-paid female executive still earns only 68% of the salary paid to her male counterpart.
Firms that include women on their senior management teams showed greater improvement in corporate performance.
62 percentof the firms that included women on their senior management team saw their market share grow, compared with only 39% of companies with no female senior management.

Advancements in technology should help ease the movement of more women into leadership. Computers enable women to work more flexible hours and better balance work and family commitments, which is not expected of their male counterparts. (How equal is that?)

So-called feminine leadership traits will grow in importance in the 21st century, according to more than 160 international companies and 75 senior executives’ view of their firm’s progress toward gender equity.

Most respondents, predominantly male, predicted wide-spread abandonment of the “command and control” managerial style for a more “team-oriented” approach. That does not seem all that bad to me. I can think of a lot of companies that could use more teamwork and less monarchy leadership.

These business gurus saw this new style as requiring skills that are “more feminine than masculine,” thus giving an edge to female managers. However, another 15-year study has shown that female managers are no more inclusive or democratic than men when making workplace decisions.

As grim as these facts might be, I do not want to discourage any prospective female entrepreneurs. We female business owners know that we may have to work twice as hard for half the recognition and pay, but ladies – statistics show we will outlive our male counterparts.

We know that any woman who is a wife and mother and also in business, could do the job of two air traffic controllers without breaking a sweat even as the airport burns to the ground.

The way you deal with your people, and the relationships you build will lay the foundation for the strength of your group. The stronger your relationship, the stronger their trust and confidence is in your capabilities.

Once you have their trust and confidence, you may now proceed to communicate the goals and objectives you are to undertake.

Communication is a very important key to good leadership. Without this you can not be a good leader. The knowledge and technical expertise you have must be clearly imparted to other people.

Also, you can not be a good leader and unless you have good judgment. You must be able to assess situations, weigh the pros and cons of any decision, and actively seek out a solution.

It is this judgment that your subordinates will come to rely upon. Therefore, good decision-making is vital to the success of your organization.

Leaders are not do-it-all heroes. You should not claim to know everything, and you should not rely upon your skills alone.

You should recognize and take advantage of the skills and talents your subordinates have. Only when you come to this realization will you be able to work as one cohesive unit.

Remember being a leader takes a good deal of work and time. It is not learned overnight. Remember, also, that it is not about just you. It is about you and the people around you.

Creating SMART Goals

True goals, unlike wishes or resolutions, should be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time sensitive.

Be Specific

When formulating a goal, it should be as specific as possible. Exactly what are you trying to do or accomplish? Use clear, exact terms to define your goal.

Make It Measurable!

Every goal should be measurable. Whenever possible, quantify your goal with numbers that define how much, how long, how high, etc. A quantifiable measurement takes the goal out of the fuzzy abstract and brings it into clear, sharp focus. When a goal is measurable, you can clearly see whether you met, exceeded, or fell short of the goal—and by exactly how much. Goals that suggest you want to become “good,” “better,” “successful,” or “the best” at something are not measurable.

Aim for What’s Attainable

Goals must be attainable. Setting a goal too high only ensures failure. Be honest with yourself—up front—about how much time and energy you can devote to achieving your goal. Then set a goal that you have a reasonable probability of reaching. Stretch yourself a bit, but don’t stretch yourself so far that you lose hope of attaining it.

At the same time, don’t limit yourself by setting your goals too low. Remember that your level of desire and your willingness to work toward your goals are directly proportionate to your ability to achieve them. Set goals that you really want to achieve to realize dreams that are really important to you! Your motivation level will be higher, you’ll be willing to spend more time to achieve those goals, and you’ll be more persistent.

Note: You can create attainable goals for even those “impossible” dreams. Keep reading.

Be Realistic

Goals must be realistic. Goals are something you work to achieve. They aren’t miracles or magic. Set goals that you can reasonably achieve based on your background, skills, and talents as they currently exist. As you grow and develop, you can adjust your goals higher accordingly.

Some of your goals may even be to acquire more background information, improve your skills, and exercise more of your talents to move you further along toward the achievement of your goals. Don’t be afraid to call on outside resources to help you achieve your goals, too. There’s no rule that says you have to do it all on your own! What may be “unrealistic” for you to achieve may be easy for someone else to do.

Think outside the box. Do you have to incorporate your new business yourself? Do you need a law degree to incorporate your business? No! Instead, your goal could be to locate a qualified attorney to incorporate your business for you. Hire help if you need to. Draw on local and community resources. Look on the Internet. Ask your family and friends. Leave no stone unturned.

You can often achieve the “unrealistic” with the help of others!

Set a Timeframe

Goals must be assigned a particular timeframe. How long do you have to complete the goal? If you don’t set an expectation of how much time it should take you to accomplish it or when it should be finished, you will never feel a sense of urgency to complete the goal. It could hang out there forever. Setting a timeframe also provides a built-in checkpoint so you can reassess your goals and make sure you are progressing toward your dreams.

Dreams vs. Goals

First let me say that dreaming is critical to goal setting because dreams are the foundation that goals are built on. Dreams are what keep you going when the going gets tough. They give you hope and give you a hint into the future that you can create for yourself.

But, dreams ARE NOT goals. Dreams are passive. Anyone can do it, and without moving a muscle. Goals on the other hand are active. They require action, and they require effort. Goals require you to take initiative and
do something.

Let's look at what goals aren't now. They aren't wishes. They aren't something you say and then walk away, waiting for someone else to do the work. Goals require active involvment and some work. Goals aren't vague or unattainable. They aren't impossible. They aren't random or magic or mysterious.

Plain and simply, a goal is something very specific that you can identify, you desire to achieve, you plan to achieve, and you put forth the effort to achieve.

Not New Year’s Resolutions

Some people also confuse New Year’s resolutions with goals. New Year’s resolutions are seldom goals—they’re more apt to be wishes. Typically, people set New Year’s resolutions because it is the popular thing to do at a particular time of year. They don’t spend a lot of time thinking about what they really want to achieve in life, and most resolutions focus merely on eradicating some aspect of their life they don’t like all that much—not on building a positive result. Furthermore, resolutions are flimsily worded, too generic or vague, and they don’t involve a wholehearted commitment on the part of the people making them.

It’s not surprising then, that most New Year’s resolutions are broken before the month of January is through.

Goals, on the other hand, require concentrated thought, have a specific objective, should be worded positively, and require a commitment. Goals are the stepping-stones that lead you to the life of your dreams.

OK. We now know what S.M.A.R.T. Goals are. Let's take a closer look at each of the components.

Specific: Goals are no place to waffle. They are no place to be vague. Ambiguous goals produce ambiguous results. Incomplete goals produce incomplete futures.

When we are specific, we harness the power of our dreams and set forces into action that empower us to achieve our goals. We then know exactly what it is we are shooting for. There is no question. As we establish our priorities and manage our time, we do so for a specific goal to achieve the results we expect. There is no wondering or guessing. The future is locked into our minds and we see it – specifically – and that is powerful! Never underestimate just how important it is to have very specific, concrete goals. They act as magnets that draw you toward them! A S.M.A.R.T. goal is specific.

Measurable: Always set goals that are measurable. I would say “specifically measurable” to take into account our principle of being specific as well. Our goals should be such that we know when we are advancing and by how much. Whether it is by hours, pounds, dollars or whatever, we should be able to see exactly how we are measuring up as we proceed through the journey of life using our goals. Could you imagine if you didn’t measure your goals? You would never know which way you were going or even if you were going anywhere! A S.M.A.R.T. goal is measurable.

Attainable: One of the detrimental things that many people do – and they do it with good intentions – is to set goals that are so high they are unattainable. Yes, it is very important to set big goals that cause your heart to soar with excitement, but it is also imperative to make sure that they are attainable. In the next section we talk about being realistic. So what does it mean to be attainable? An attainable goal is one that is both realistic but also attainable in a shorter period of time than what you have to work with. Now when I say attainable, I don't mean easy. Our goals should be set so they are just out of our reach; so they will challenge us to grow as we reach forward to achieve them. After the next paragraph, I will give you an example of a goal that is both attainable and realistic. A S.M.A.R.T. goal is attainable.

Realistic: The root word of realistic is “real.” A goal has to be something that we can reasonably make “real” or a “reality” in our lives. There are some goals that simply are not realistic. You have to be able to say, even if it is a tremendously stretching goal, that yes, indeed, it is entirely realistic -- that you could make it. You may even have to say that it will take x, y, and z to do it, but if those happen, then it can be done. This is in no way to say it shouldn’t be a big goal, but it must be realistic. This is to a great degree, up to the individual. For one person a goal may be realistic, but for another unrealistic. I would encourage you to be very honest with yourself as you do your planning and evaluation. Perhaps it would be good to get a friend to help you (as long as that friend is by nature an optimist and not a pessimist). This can go a long way toward helping you know what is realistic. A S.M.A.R.T. goal is realistic.

Example of Attainable and Realistic: Knowing that perhaps you could use a bit of help differentiating attainable and realistic, here is an example: You are overweight and have 150 pounds to lose to get to your proper weight. Is that goal attainable? Yes, considering that you also make it realistic. For example, it isn’t realistic to think you can do it in 5 months. 18-24 months would be realistic (with hard work). Thus, losing 150 pounds in 2 years is both attainable and realistic, while losing 150 pounds in 5 months is neither attainable nor realistic.

Time: Every goal should have a timeframe attached to it. I think that life itself is much more productive for us as humans because there is a timeframe connected to it. Could you imagine how much procrastination there would be on earth if people never died? We would never get “around to it.” We could always put it off. One of the powerful aspects of a great goal is that it has an end, a time in which you are shooting to accomplish it. You start working on it because you know there is an end. As time goes by you work because you don’t want to get behind. As it approaches, you work diligently because you want to meet the deadline. You may even have to break down a big goal into different measured parts time frames. That is okay. Set smaller goals and work them out in their own time. A S.M.A.R.T. goal has a timeline.

S.MA.R.T. Goals

Okay, now we are going to talk about S.M.A.R.T. Goals. We have already introduced previously the 4 main components of Goal-Setting. S.M.A.R.T. goals is the third component. What does S.M.A.R.T. goals mean. I'll tell you. It means Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-Sensitive. Let's break each of these on down:
Specific: Don't be vague, Ask yourself, exactly what do I want?
Measurable: Quantify your goal. How will you know if you've achieved it or not?
Attainable: Be honest with yourself about what you can reasonably accomplish at this point in your life - along with taking into consideration your current responsibilities.
Realistic: It's got to be do-able, real and practical.
Time: Associate a timeframe with each goal. When should you complete the goal?

Take time to ask yourself these questions. Jot down your answers. You will be well on your way to setting your goals.

Dreams and Goals

One of the amazing things we have been given as humans is the unquenchable desire to have dreams of a better life. But even better than just the gift of dreaming, we have the ability to establish goals to live out those dreams. We have also been given the ability to take action and pursue those dreams and not only to pursue them, but to possess the cognitive ability to actually lay out a plan and strategies (setting goals)to achieve those dreams. Powerful!

So how do we know what our dreams are? This is an interesting process and it relates primarily to the art of listening. This is not listening to others; it is listening to yourself. If we listen to others, we hear their plans and dreams (and many will try to put their plans and dreams on us). If we listen to others, we can never be fulfilled. We will only chase elusive dreams that are not rooted deep within us. No, we must listen to our own hearts to hear the dreams born out of the passions and desires we each uniquely possess.

Here are some practical steps/thoughts on hearing from our hearts on what our dreams are:

Take time to be quiet. This is something that we don’t do enough in this busy world of ours. We rush, rush, rush and we are constantly listening to noise all around us. We must not get faked out by just being busy.

Think about what really thrills you. When you are quiet, think about those things that really get your blood moving. What would you love to do, either for fun or for a living? What would you love to accomplish? What would you try if you were guaranteed to succeed?

Write down all of your dreams as you have them. Don’t think of any as too outlandish or foolish – remember, you’re dreaming!

Now look at your list and prioritize those dreams. Which are most important? Which are most feasible? Which would you love to do the most? Put them in the order in which you will actually try to attain them.

Now here is the big picture. Life is too short to not pursue your dreams. Someday your life will near its end and all you will be able to do is look backwards. You can reflect with joy or regret. And we all know that joy (or disciplines) weigh ounces while regret weighs tons. Those who dream, who set goals and act on them to live out their dreams are those who live lives of joy and have a sense of peace when they near the end of their lives. They have finished well and for that they possess a sense of pride and accomplishment, not only for themselves but also for their families. And that feeling is priceless.

Goal Setting: Evaluation & Reflection

In order to know where we are going, we have to know where we came from and where we are. It is also knowing how well we have achieved the things we previously set our sights on. This is the core of evaluation and reflection.

This process is pretty simple. First find a quiet place. Reflection is best done away from distraction. It gives your mind the space to think. Next, take regular times to reflect, whether it be weekly, monthly, etc. Then, look at what you have accomplished and where you are. Be specific, honest and truthful! Write it down. Keep a record. This gives you the chance at the next stage of evaluation to see exactly where you were last time. Keep this as objective as possible. Finally, look forward and set your nest goal. Stretch yourself according to what works for you.

This is a good example of evaluation and reflection. Be sure to follow the general idea and set aside time for your own.

Now we are going to start getting into some of the aspects of goal setting. There are four main areas I want to emphasize.
1. Evaluation & Reflection - The only way we can decide what we want in the future is to first know where we are right now, and what our level of satisfaction is for where we are in our lives.
2. Dreams & Goals - What are your dreams & goals? Have you ever REALLY sat down nd thought through your life's values and decided what you REALLY want? These are dreams and goals that are born out of your own heart and mind, not what someone else says our dreams and goals should be.
3. S.M.A.R.T. Goals - S.M.A.R.T. means Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-sensitive.
Specific: Don't be vague. Measurable: Quantify your goal. Attainable: What can you reasonably accomplish at this point in your life? Essential Rules For Effective Email Marketing

Now I know what you are thinking: basics do not sound very exciting or "empowering." But these basics are the foundation upon which everything else is built. Miss these and you may end up spinning your wheels for the next 12 months. After all, would you not rather be spinning stories about how you made your first million?

If you want an email campaign to succeed, you do not want to offend anyone when sending your messages. Turn off a consumer with your email and you can be sure they will tune out your message. Do not let this happen to you!

A message that earns respect makes sales. That is why our first topic for discussion is email etiquette. Train yourself to always -- and I mean ALWAYS -- stick to the rules below when crafting your email message.

Rule #1 - Always Wrap Your Lines At 65 Characters Or Less Whenever you write an email, always format the lines so that they are 65 characters, or less, across. To do this, you may need to do a hard return by hitting Enter at the end of the line. Wondering why to limit your lines to just 65 characters? (Good question! It shows you are thinking.) There are two reasons that less is more.

The first thing to remember is that looking at a computer screen for a long time causes eye fatigue for many readers. The shorter span of characters across the screen makes
reading easier and more appealing to the recipient of your email message. The other reason to go short instead of long is this: some email clients automatically enforce line-wrapping at 60-65 characters on received messages. If your email is wrapped at 70, the content will arrive all chopped up. This makes it unattractive...and worse -- unappealing.

-- Tip within a Rule #1: Email clients such as Outlook Express allow you to set the line-wrap to any character-width you choose. That means you will not have to hit Enter each time after typing 65 characters. Makes life easier!
-- Tip within a Rule #2 - You can type 65 asterisks or dashes in a Notepad file to create a template. Then paste your email below it to see if any lines extend too far to the right.

Rule # 2 - BE CAREFUL USING ALL CAPS

How many times have you changed the TV channel to avoid listening to a screaming car salesperson? No one likes a screaming salesperson...and no one likes a "screaming" email
message, either. Odds are, when someone has over-amped the volume of their message by using too many capital letters (not to mention too many exclamation points and other
punctuation) – you are going to be turned off. On the Internet, email messages written in all caps are considered yelling. It is okay to write some sentences and some words in all caps, but do not go overboard.
-- Tip within a Rule: Consumers buy from a source they trust. Emails in all caps are perceived as shady or uneducated, and have an appearance that damages the credibility of an offer.

Rule #3 - Watch Your Ps & Qs (Spelling and Grammar)

Would you be influenced by an email selling you something that had noticeable spelling and grammar mistakes? Sure you would...and the influence would be negative, not positive! When a consumer reads a sales message that is filled with errors, they think to themselves, Good grief, this person doesn`t even take the time to get his emails right. His product is probably the same quality as his emails.
When you are in business, your image is your reputation and your reputation is the reason people buy from you or the guy down the block. It is essential that you create an image of Integrity, Credibility, and Honesty in the mind of your prospects. Sending emails filled with errors does not hurt your professional image...it destroys it. (Ouch!)

How many times have you heard about a great home business opportunity? Probably more than you care to remember. At the same time, how many of these home business opportunities ended up being a scam? Again, probably quite a few. Hopefully, you were never the victim of any of these scams, but unfortunately, there are others who probably fell for these “opportunities.” The fact of the matter is that these scammers would not be wasting their time if they were not making them any money. As long as people continue to get seek out home business opportunities, these scammers are going to stick around to trick more and more people.

The best way to avoid a home business scam is to thoroughly research each opportunity before you move forward with it and invest your time and or money. This means doing much more than simply reading a bit about it online. You may get lucky and end up with a good home business opportunity, but chances are that you will not. The process is often called "networking" because distributors share ideas and products to a "network" of people.

Here's a checklist that will help you choose the best vehicle for you.

1.What is the product or service?
You'll be talking about it extensively, so you need to be proud and excited to tell the story. You'll also need to be a "product of your product," which means you use it in your daily life and understand it first hand.
2.Does it have integrity?
Check out the company, people and products. Do they do what they say? Without their integrity behind you, you will not be successful.
3.Is the company "Distributor-Driven?"
In other words, does it function for the benefit of the people who distribute its products? Distributors are the profit centers of a direct selling or network marketing company. They should be fairly paid and have access to fairly priced marketing tools. Perhaps most vital to the success of the distributor and the company, however, is that ongoing training and effective distributor services be in place. Check out your prospective company with these things in mind, both for the short-term new person, and the long-term association.
4. Does it have good management?
As in any business, excellent management can mean the difference between success and failure. Do they understand their product?
Do they know how to run a company?
Do they have network marketing backgrounds?
4.Does it have a duplicable business system?
Most companies leave this up to the distributors - allowing them the "freedom" to do their own thing. A few companies consider this irresponsible at best and a recipe for failure on average. Look for a company that publishes a video or booklet describing the steps you'll need to take to be successful. This is a company that recognizes that your success is their success, and they're doing something to ensure it.
5.Does it have a fair, just and JUICY Compensation Plan?
It would be wise for you to find a mentor who can help you determine whether the compensation plan is a good and balanced one. Here are a few pitfalls to avoid.
Some plans can take away people that you have brought in.
Some plans are top-heavy; they reward people who are already earning the most, or who have been in the longest, at the expense of the new people.
Some companies change their plans often. This is disruptive and usually not in the best interest of distributors.
Some companies have challenges as they grow. Learning from these challenges is great, but some companies never learn.
Some companies lead people on with rewards like cruises and prizes. Look for companies that reward with compensation - that you can use as you choose!
Some companies make wild claims about the big money you can make quickly. Don't buy it!

Yesterday was my daughter's birthday party. We went to Chuck-e-Cheese. She was 2. What a great day it was. Emmi played, opened her presents and got a personal concert from chuck-e-Cheese himself. (She wasn't too sure about him.) Being able to watch her having so much fun, was all I needed. That in itself made my day!

Guess who I spent last night with? Rascal Flatts. Wow! What a great night it was. In case you can't tell, I am a Rascal Flatts fan. They were in concert here in Charlotte last night and I went. For three guys, they sure are talented. The only thing I was disappointed in was that they didn't play long enough. Want to know what else happened? As they say, what happens in Charlotte, stays in Charlotte. lol

Today, I was able to spend the day with my daughter and what a busy day it was. We went out to lunch and then spent time at a local Nature Museum where we got to experience the "Talking Tree." The kids all sit around a make shift "play" campfire as if they were camping in the woods. Then ole Mr. Tree wakes up. As the kids here the different animal sounds, Mr. Tree explains what kind of animal they are hearing and the characteristics of each. She and I both had fun!

If I was still working my 9-5, I would not be able to do such things. Being a stay at home working mom is great!
